Social media is a whole new world in marketing. Some people love it, while others hate it. And, yet others love using it for their own personal enjoyment as another means to communication with friends and family, but have no idea where to begin using it for their business.
I have to be honest here: I love social media, but not all of it. I started using Instagram for fun, because it's photography based. I've been trying out all of the other types of social media outlets to see if they are useful both on a personal level (do I like using it?), and for work (will it help me engage with folks?). Instead of sharing every single media platform, I want to share how Instagram is useful, and what types of businesses could use it best!
Because Instagram is image based, most of the businesses that will benefit from it are those that rely on images to sell their products or services. A good way to tell would be to ask: back in the days before the internet, how would this business have sold their goods? If it's visual, then yes, Instagram is a good fit. Florists, Clothing Designers, Paper goods, artists of all kinds are good examples of who Instagram may serve best. Now that Instagram is big, you can pay for sponsored posts so that adds for Car Insurance or new movies show up to everyone, and that is not what I'm talking about here. I'm suggesting that a better way to promote your business on Instagram is to use it like a show and tell outlet to engage your fans or to help new fans find you.
For me, I share behind the scenes, what inspires me and my photography work. That shows off my style and what it may be like to work with me, which attracts folks who may want to hire me to photograph them.
If you're a big enough business, start using your business name as soon as possible. If you're like me, a solo-preneur, and find that your business name is already taken, you can use your name or something similar. Honestly, I may change account name to better align with my brand than my name, but for now it works for me! The point is that you can get started right now and see if it works for you. You don't have to be on every social media platform, only the ones that best connect you to your clients are worth the effort.
