New Year, New Meaning: Photographic Legacy

Home / Blog / New Year, New Meaning: Photographic Legacy

My Mother passed away earlier this month. She was battling breast cancer. Losing her was mind-boggling and difficult because she died so quickly. I have learned so many things I could not anticipate with her death.

I had a similar experience when her younger sister died two years ago, also fighting cancer. It was the kind of loss that shakes you to your core and leaves you feeling lost. I am there again, but perhaps a little less lost. The need to be intentional with my actions, words and goals is here.

That is why I have a new offer: if you or someone you know in the Seattle area is battling cancer, I would be honored to photograph them as a gift. I can give one portrait session away every month.

As I was in charge of my Mom's memorial slideshow, I felt ever more intensely how important photographs are a part of a person's legacy. And, I want to honor my Mother's life and all she taught me by helping someone else in this small way.

My Mom was my first teacher, my biggest fan, most constructive critic, and I am beyond grateful for everything she was in my life and the lives of so many others.

Thank you, JoAnne. This seems like the most tangible way to honor her journey.
